Vintage Hand-Carved Wood Character Pipe – 25cm – Soviet Prison Art – Figural Bowl

Description: A distinctive vintage hand-carved wooden character pipe featuring a smiling, swollen-cheeked face forming the bowl. The carving showcases exaggerated facial features, raised brows, deep-set eyes, and expressive contours, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence. The long stem is made from dark-stained hardwood and decorated with etched floral and foliate motifs, lending the pipe a refined and elegant profile.

This pipe is representative of USSR prisoner-made craft, produced circa the 1960s–1970s within correctional workshop settings. Figural pipes of this type often combined bold facial caricature with decorative detailing on the stem, reflecting a blend of folk tradition, individual expression, and the materials and tools available within institutional production environments. Today, such pieces are primarily collected for their visual character and historical context.
