A superb antique Anglo-Indian hand-carved pipe rack and tobacco jar set, crafted in Kashmir circa 1900. This intricate ensemble features deeply carved mythical lion-dragon figures across the backplate, a removable lidded tobacco jar, and integrated holders for four pipes.The carving style, detailing, and walnut wood strongly align with Kashmiri artisan traditions, an industry renowned for its fine woodcarving since the 15th century, when craftsmen from Central Asia helped establish Kashmir as a centre of decorative arts.
The piece shows excellent craftsmanship with layered relief carving, scaled dragon bodies, and stylised architectural motifs. The tobacco jar includes a brass-lined interior and matching carved lid. With a combined weight of approx. 1.53 kg, the set has a substantial and impressive presence.
