Description:
A striking vintage hand-carved wooden character pipe featuring a tribal-inspired devil mask forming the bowl. The face is sharply defined with angular brows, a pronounced nose, carved beard texture, and three protruding horn pegs—two at the back of the head and one above the brow. The bowl is fitted with a metal insert, typical of mid-century pipes produced for functional use as well as decorative display.
 
This pipe is representative of USSR prisoner-made craft, produced circa the 1960s–1970s within correctional workshop settings. Figural pipes of this type often drew on exaggerated mask-like forms and folkloric or mythic themes, combining bold carving with colourful decorative elements. Today, these pieces are collected primarily for their sculptural presence and historical context.
 
The long, slender hardwood stem is decorated with banded coloured resin inlays (yellow, red, white, and green), giving the piece a strong folk-art aesthetic and excellent visual contrast.
