Antique Japanese Hand-Carved Boxwood Wild Cat Sculpture on Root Base – c.1890
Description
Exceptional antique Japanese hand-carved wild cat sculpture dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890. This finely executed work depicts a powerful feline in a dynamic forward stance, mouth open in a fierce snarl, with strongly articulated facial features and an intense, expressive gaze.
The body is carved in full relief with deeply incised fur texture flowing across the form, conveying both movement and muscular tension. The wild cat is mounted on an organically shaped root-form base, fully integrated into the sculpture, with one forepaw raised and braced atop the elevated section of the base. This composition creates a sense of motion, balance, and controlled aggression.
Japanese animal carvings of this quality were produced during the Meiji period for both domestic appreciation and export, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship and sculptural sophistication. Wild cats and other predatory animals were favored subjects, symbolising strength, vigilance, and dominance within the natural world. Works of this scale and execution are uncommon and increasingly scarce.
A rare and visually commanding Japanese sculpture with strong presence, character, and historical depth.
