About Us
We began in London and, in 2023, relocated to Melbourne, Australia bringing every single rug with us. Behind the scenes, it's a genuinely small operation: I work in film set construction, while my partner Alexia manages our twins (born on her birthday in November 2022), our four-and-a-half-year-old, and heroically all of our shipping and logistics.
About five years ago, I stumbled across an Afghan war rug online and bought one, purely out of curiosity. Then I ordered 30. Then 45. Since then, we've imported around 30–40 genuine, handmade Afghan war rugs a month, and sold over 500 to customers all over the world. It's been, in the best way, completely bonkers and along the way we've met some brilliant people who share our appreciation for these pieces.
A couple of years in, we hit a serious and genuinely strange legal near-miss: an American rug dealer claimed copyright ownership over the "drone rug" design found across Afghan war rugs, and threatened legal action if we kept selling them. We came through it, though the Drone Rugs collection remains in storage as a result you can read the full story in our Drone Rugs section below.
We work with two trusted suppliers in Pakistan and Afghanistan, both of whom assure us of fair trade between rug-maker and supplier at every step. We always pay a fair price, and we're assured that price is passed on fairly to everyone involved in making and distributing each rug from the weaving families themselves through to delivery. Every rug we sell is genuine, handmade, and one of a kind and every person who follows, orders, and shares what we do makes this possible. We appreciate it every bit as much as you appreciate the rugs.
Our Story
It started with a single Afghan war rug bought on a whim five years and over 500 handmade rugs later, Silver Tongue War Rugs & Exotic Supplies has grown into a genuine, family-run collection of Afghan and Ukrainian war rugs, Soviet posters, and rare curiosities, sourced and imported by hand, one piece at a time. No mass production, no reorders just real history, woven by real families, with a percentage of each sale goes to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund.
That first rug turned into thirty. Thirty turned into forty-five. Since then, we've imported around 30 to 40 genuine, handmade Afghan war rugs a month, and sold over 500 to customers all over the world. It's been, in the best possible way, completely bonkers, and along the way we've met some genuinely excellent people who share our appreciation for these pieces.
This has never been a warehouse full of staff. It's me working in film set construction with my partner, heroically, all of our shipping and logistics on top of that. We began in London and relocated the entire operation to Melbourne, Australia in 2023, every rug came with us. We still ship internationally, and we still handle every part of this ourselves.
Every rug is handmade by families who have been designing and weaving for generations. Nothing here is mass-produced, and nothing is ever remade once it's sold. What's listed is what genuinely exists in our collection.
