Mid-Century Dutch-Australian Oil Painting – Signed V. McPhail – Melbourne Artist – Brick House & Garden Scene – 1950s–70s

Description

Charming mid-century oil painting on board, signed lower right V. McPhail. Believed to be by a Dutch-born artist living in Melbourne, active around the 1950s–1970s.

The work depicts a stately red-brick home with manicured gardens and curved driveway under a soft sky. It showcases careful composition and craftsmanship typical of post-war European artists who settled in Australia, blending European realism with Australian light and colour.

Background: After World War II, many Dutch and European painters immigrated to Australia and contributed to a wave of refined, architectural and landscape art. Melbourne’s art societies in the 1950s–60s frequently exhibited works in this style—rich in observation and quiet atmosphere. This piece fits beautifully within that tradition.
