About this piece
Antique Australian Poison Bottle, Amber Ribbed “POISON” Chemist Bottle, AGM Base Mark, c.1910 to 1920
Description: A genuine early Australian amber poison bottle featuring bold embossed POISON lettering and full ribbed warning panels. This compact, squat-bodied form was commonly used by chemists in the early 20th century for dispensing toxic preparations, liniments, iodine solutions, and other hazardous compounds.
The base bears an early, lightly struck AGM mark (Australian Glass Manufacturers Co.), consistent with production between c.1910 to 1920, before the adoption of later standardised logos. The amber glass colour, tactile ribbing, and rounded shoulder profile are all characteristic of poison packaging intended to be recognisable even in low light.
A true early Australian chemist bottle with excellent display presence and collector appeal.
Features: • Era: c.1910 to 1920 • Origin: Australia, Australian Glass Manufacturers (AGM) • Colour: Amber • Embossing: “POISON” on front panel • Body: Squat cylindrical-shouldered form with full ribbed tactile warning sides • Height approx.: ~4 inches (see ruler in photos) • Base Markings: Early AGM letters (light strike) with mould numbers • Thick glass walls with early machine-made finish
Construction / Materials: • Press-moulded glass with early machine-finished lip • Ribbed warning panels designed for safe tactile identification • Heavy amber glass typical of pre-1920 Australian chemist poison ware
Condition: Very good antique condition with expected light surface wear. No cracks or major chips observed. Embossing remains clear, and amber colour shows well. Minor rubbing and small manufacturing imperfections consistent with bottles of this age.
Type: Antique amber poison bottle, early Australian chemist / pharmaceutical collectible.
A scarce early Australian AGM poison bottle with bold embossing and classic ribbed warning design, an excellent addition for collectors of antique chemist ware, poison bottles, or early Australian glass.
Warm regards, Aaron
